Although Google CEO Sundar Pichai claims Gemini is the most powerful AI chatbot on the market, user renewal rates don’t match that claim. ChatGPT Plus and Anthropic’s Claude are performing better in this area.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has touted Gemini as the most powerful AI chatbot, but recently released data tells a different story. Earnest Analytics analyzed financial and credit card data from millions of consumers and found that only 60% of Gemini Advanced paid users kept their service after six months, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Where does Gemini stand against the competition?

Gemini performs better than some competitors like Character.AI and Perplexity, but it falls short against OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus and Anthropic’s Claude.

  • ChatGPT Plus: About 70% of its customers continue its service even after six months.
  • Claude Pro: More than 60% of its customers renew their subscription.
  • Perplexity Pro: About 50% of its customers retain the service.
  • Character.AI (c.ai+): Its customer renewal rate is slightly higher at 45%.

Gemini’s services and fees

Gemini Advanced is offered under the Google One AI Premium Plan, which has a monthly subscription fee of $19.99. It also comes with 2TB of storage and other Google One services.

On the other hand, ChatGPT Plus is available at a subscription of $20 per month and it not only gives better chatting features, but also gives the user a chance to create new features and custom GPTs.

Big difference in users and downloads

Google has not yet disclosed how many active users Gemini has. But in comparison, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has about 300 million weekly active users. According to data from SensorTower, ChatGPT has been downloaded about 465 million times on Android and iOS. On the other hand, Gemini has been downloaded only 106 million times.

Google’s Gemini offers many advanced features, but its popularity and customer renewal rate lags behind services like ChatGPT and Claude. One of the major reasons for this could be that Gemini has not been promoted more widely among customers. Also, OpenAI and Anthropic have focused more on providing additional value to their users, which attracts their customers.

This is a signal for Google that to remain strong in the market, it will not only have to improve its features but also provide more affordable and unique services to users.

OpenAI is planning to bring more updates to its GPT model soon. Anthropic is working on making its Claude chatbot more friendly to small businesses. Google has hinted that Gemini will be made more interactive and user-friendly.
