A new revolution in quantum technology begins

Scientists have designed a new micro-energy-saving device that generates photon pairs and maintains their quantum entanglement state, no matter how far apart they are. This important discovery is expected to revolutionize the development of quantum computing, communication and precision sensor technologies.

What is quantum entanglement?

Quantum entanglement, which Albert Einstein called “spooky action at a distance”, is a unique scientific principle in which two photons are interconnected. Changing the state of one photon immediately affects the other. is, no matter what the distance between the two. This plays an important role in the development of quantum bits (qubits).

How was the device built?

Associate Professor P. James Shook of Columbia University’s School of Engineering and his team developed an innovative method. They used a special van der Waals semiconductor material “molybdenum disulfide”. This material was arranged in six crystal layers in such a way that each layer was rotated 180 degrees.

When light passes through this structure, a process called “quasi-phase-matching” occurs, which changes the properties of light and generates photon pairs. This technique has not only made the process more efficient, but the chances of errors have also been significantly reduced compared to conventional methods.

Features and utility of the device

  • Unique size: This device is only 3.4 microns thick.
  • Use in communication field: It is capable of generating photon pairs operating at telecommunication wavelengths.
  • Future prospects: This technology can be useful in quantum communication for satellite communication and mobile phones.
  • Accuracy and efficiency: More accurate and with fewer errors than conventional methods.

Professor Shuk, who is involved in the creation of the device, says that Van der Waals materials can become the main components in the next generation of non-linear and quantum photonic architectures. This will make the development of single-chip technology possible in the future.

In 2025, this technology can develop even further in the field of quantum communication. Apart from this, many companies are working rapidly towards quantum computers, which can widen the use of this device.

Scenario of Quantum Technology in India

India is also making rapid progress in the field of quantum technology. The government has launched the “National Quantum Mission”, in which a provision of Rs 8,000 crore has been made to work on such advanced technologies.

This discovery can prove to be an important milestone in the field of science and technology. The use of quantum technology can not only be expected to enable faster communications and precise sensing, but it can also open the door to new possibilities in many other scientific and commercial fields.
