On Sunday, March 2, 2025, a young American tennis player named Emma Navarro won a big tennis competition called the Merida Open. She beat a player from Colombia named Emiliana Arango with a score of 6-0, 6-0. This means Navarro won every single game in the match, which is a huge deal! It only took her 55 minutes to win, and this was her second time winning a tennis tournament in her career.

Navarro, who is 23 years old, is really good at tennis. She’s ranked number 10 in the world and was the top player in this tournament. Last year, she won another competition called the Hobart International. In the Merida Open, she was so strong that she didn’t lose a single set the whole time. A “set” is like a big part of a tennis match, and winning without losing one shows how great she played.

She won by hitting the ball hard and serving it well, which means she started each point with a strong hit that Arango couldn’t stop. Navarro didn’t let Arango get even close to winning any of her serves, and she won 71 percent of the points when Arango was serving. That’s a fancy way of saying she was in control the whole time.

This kind of win—6-0, 6-0—is super rare. Navarro is only the fifth player in the last 25 years to do this in a big final match. The last person to do it was a famous player named Iga Swiatek in 2021.

Her opponent, Emiliana Arango, is from Colombia and ranked number 133 in the world. She had been playing really well lately, winning 11 matches in a row before the final, including another tournament last week. But she had tough, long matches right before facing Navarro, including a nearly three-hour match on Saturday. That probably made her tired, and she couldn’t keep up with Navarro’s energy.

After this match, Arango will move up to number 80 in the world rankings, which is the highest she’s ever been. Even though she lost, that’s a big achievement for her.

In short, Emma Navarro won her first WTA 500 trophy—a really important award in tennis—by playing an amazing game against Emiliana Arango at the Merida Open.
